Professor G.O Alegbeleye

Professor Alegbeleye obtained a Bachelor of Education degree in History and French from University of Ibadan in 1972. He later proceeded to Case Western Reserve University where he bagged the MSLS degree in Librarianship and Information Science in 1977. He was earlier a student of the Universite de Nice, France from 1970-1971 where he obtained the diplome d’etude Francaise (France) in 1971.

He proceeded thereafter to the Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. to obtain a P.M.L.S (Post-Master Certificate in Library, Information and Archival Studies) in 1982. He bagged his PhD degree in 1983 from the prestigious Premier University of Ibadan.

Award, Honours and Commendations

Professor Alegbeleye was a University of Ibadan Scholar from 1968-1972. He won the French Government Scholarship in 1996-1997. He was a UNESCO fellow in 1981, Commonwealth Foundation Fellow in 1986 and German Government Fellow 1988. He was Honorary Member of the International and Association of Social Science Information and Technology (IASSIST) from 1985-1990. In view of his outstanding contribution to Records and Information Management, he became the Vice-President, Association of International Records and Information Management Council 1986-1991. Prof. Alegbeleye has been:

  • Patron to Students Union in Ebo Community for years where he helped in establishing a library and information centre for the students in Ebo community.
  • Chairman building community at Holy Trinity Anglican Church Ebo where he is helping in the construction of a new church building.
  • Chairman, Oka Development Group, Ibadan chapter where he has successfully helped to organize meetings between the eminent sons and daughters of Oka Akoko.
  • Member, International Records Management Council, 1984-1989.
  • Member, International Association of Social Science Information and Technology (IASSIAT), 1985-1990.
  • Adhoc President, Society of Nigerian Archivists, 2014-2017.
  • Member, Association of Commonwealth Archivists and Records Managers, 1988-1993.
  • Member, and Fellow of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), 1976 to date.
  • Editor, (Africa) International Records Management Journal, 1988-1999.
  • Editor-in-Chief, the Nigeria Archives Journal, 1989-1995.
  • Editor-in-Chief Journal of Librarianship and Information Science in Africa, 1999.
  • Listed in the Marquis Who’s International 8th Edition.

Professionally, Professor Alegbeleye was Vice-President (Africa) International Records Management Council and for many years section member of the International Council on Archives (ICA). He was also the Secretary and later President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions African Section (IFLA). He was editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Librarianship and Information Science in Africa for a number of years.

Professor Alegbeleye was a former Head of the Department of Library, Archives and Information Studies University of Ibadan and also the Dean of Faculty of Education University of Ibadan from 1985-1987. He has consulted for many countries e.g. Ghana, Gambia, Sieraleone etc in the field of archives and records management.

Professor Alegbeleye is a prolific writer and has to his credit, about one hundred publications in various aspects librarianship, archives and records management.
